Marion Papillon and Georges-Philippe Vallois are delighted to announce the publication of Histoire des galeries d’art en France du XIXe au XXIe siècle, co-edited with the Comité Professionnel des Galeries d’Art (CPGA).
This project, conceived and organized by Georges-Philippe Vallois during his nearly five-year term of office (2011-2019), has benefited from the enthusiastic support of Marion Papillon, current President of the CPGA, and has been supported by successive teams.
The Comité professionnel des galeries d’art would like to extend special thanks to its benefactor and donor members, without whom this book would not have been possible.
Art galleries, little-known intermediaries between creators and their public, are at the heart of this book. Five specialists – historians, art historians and economists – draw on the most recent research to offer an unprecedented overview of their history in France, from the 19th century to the present day.
This book sketches an original history of an art market reacting to societal changes and artistic revolutions: it sheds light on the complex relationships that exist between dealers, artists, institutions and collectors of modern and contemporary art, as well as the profound transformations of the art dealer’s profession, from the curiosity sellers of yesteryear to the gallery owners of today.
The research presented in this book has benefited greatly from the help of the heritage institutions that preserve the archives of galleries and artists, making the work of historians and researchers possible.
